10th Annual Reammon Gormley Football Festival at Jock Stein Sports Facility in Hamilton

On Friday 02nd June 2023, eight road operatives from Scottish Roads Partnership’s contractor Amey, spent their social impact day helping out at three different venues for the preparation of a weekend of football hosted by Blantyre Soccer Academy at the Jock Stein Sports facility in Hamilton. The road operatives assisted with moving heavy equipment, setting up venues and football pitches for sixteen young football teams of various ages, taking part in the tenth annual ‘Reammon Gormley’ football festival. The tournament of weekend football took place at the Jock Stein sports facility on Saturday 03rd & Sunday 04th June 2023.

The festival was started off back in 2013 after the tragic death of a young local man, Reammon Gormley, who was killed after a violent attack, whilst walking home from the Parkville Bar in Blantyre after watching a football match. Reammon was a much loved and valued member of the Blantyre community and is sadly missed by his family, friends and many local people. Reammon spent some time living out in Thailand carrying out charity work to help under privileged children via “The Good Child Foundation.”

After the sudden death of Reammon and as a lasting memory, Blantyre Soccer Academy continue to hold the annual football festival in his honour. In addition, the club via their football festival and annual Sportsman Dinner, with assistance from the wider community, have helped build an art school and donated money to provide the art school with some much needed IT equipment.

Attached is a photograph of some of the SRP & Amey road operatives on the day (Garry McCool, Sean Wilkinson, Denis Marley, Des McNamara, John Clarke, Mark Walsh, Ryan Kenmure & Derek Kelly), helping out plan and organise the football event. Some of the youth teams involved provided great feedback and sent their thanks to both the Blantyre community and Amey for their efforts in making such an enjoyable event.
