SPINDLEHOWE PEDESTRIAN UNDERPASS - UDDINGSTON

16 October 2023

Cleaning & Repainting Works During October Week School Holidays from 16-20 October 2023

Regular users of Spindlehowe Pedestrian Underpass, between North British Road, Uddingston (adjacent to St John the Baptist Primary) and Spindlehowe Road (Thorniewood/Tannochside/Viewpark area) which carries pedestrians & cyclists under the M74 at Uddingston, will be closed for cleaning and repainting works, from 8am to 4:30pm each day, during the following dates:

  • Monday 16th October to Friday 20th October 2023

A signed diversion route for pedestrians & cyclists walking towards Uddingston and vice-versa, will be in place via New Edinburgh Road (west), Old Mill Road Uddingston, North British Road.

Scottish Roads Partnership (SRP) and their contractor Amey operate & maintain this underpass as part of the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project until 2047, on behalf of Transport Scotland.

The cleaning & repainting works are necessary after a recent fire and bouts of vandalism & graffiti over the years, have left the tunnel walls and ceiling in a delipidated state of repair. The works will involve power washing the walls and ceiling to remove black smoke caused by a recent fire. The walls and ceiling once cleaned will then be repainting a base white colour. For the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and our workers, it is necessary to close the underpass during the school October week, during daytime hours, to carry out these works.

The underpass is part of National Cycle Route No.75 and Sustrans Scotland have been informed of the planned daytime closures.

SRP apologise in advance for the inconvenience caused to the local communities of Thorniewood, Tannochside, Viewpark and Uddingston, who use the underpass regularly. It is hoped through collaboration with the local communities and nearby schools a ‘School Project’ for new design ideas for a new mural, can be launched in the coming months. The current mural design was from circa 2011 to highlight the ‘Children's Glasgow Games’ but over the years, due to graffiti attacks and smoke/heat damage from the recent fire, the current mural is no longer serviceable.

The works will be carried out by Scottish Roads Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with North Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Council.
