On Thursday 03rd April 2025, Scottish Roads Partnership’s (SRP) Operations Manager Graham Drummond returned to Swinton Primary School to announce the winner of their Gritting Naming Competition, after a visit by their new gritter earlier in the year. Graham announced Eilidh, aged 9, the winner of the school competition, with her brilliant choice of gritter name 'Amy Brinehouse', named after the world famous jazz singer Amy Winehouse and the gritter's own Brine tanks (salted water) housed onboard the vehicle. Eilidh was presented with a £50 toy store voucher as a prize for her fabulous idea.
The new gritter, operated by SRP and their contractor Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will patrol the adjacent M8/M73 & A8 trunk roads, for the next 8 years. These routes are located in and around the East side of Glasgow, near to Swinton Primary School. During severe weather events the name on the gritter can be enjoyed by the communities around the Greater Glasgow area.
SRP's liaison officer Martin Cochrane had visited the school earlier in the year with the new gritter and gave a presentation to the whole school, highlighting the topic of Winter Weather in Scotland & Gritting on the Trunk Roads. The school then agreed to take part in the competition to name the new gritter.
Staff at SRP and Amey are grateful for access to the school students and teachers and wish to thank them all for their fantastic efforts in naming their new gritter for the coming years ahead.
Ends.
