SRP donate to Blanytre Miners Welfare Community Garden in January 2023

MONDAY 30 JANUARY 2023 - £500 DONATION TO BLANTYRE MINERS WELFARE COMMUNITY GARDEN

With the help and assistance of the local communities and businesses in Blantyre, the Miners Welfare Charity provided an area of land at the rear of their community hub, that local people, during the Covid 19 Pandemic, turned into a Community Garden. The area was a previously unused and dilapidated space, bound on its south side by an area of new housing and was becoming an eyesore for the area before being redesigned as a garden.

Scottish Roads Partnership (SRP), as part of their ongoing ‘Good Neighbour Fund’, helped the charity organisation by donating £500 towards the redevelopment opportunity. On Monday 30th January 2023 Scottish Roads Partnership (SRP) Operations Manager Graham Drummond (pictured in middle) visited the allotment garden and met local volunteers working there, including from left to right in photo; Pat Irwin, Mary Irwin, Dr Susan Lindner-Kelly, Graham Drummond (SRP), Alex Orr, Rena Dick, Margaret Lindner and Ellen Charlton.

Dr Lindner-Kelly provided a guided tour of the garden, which was being prepared for the forthcoming planting season. The garden provides a tranquil space for local people to sit and read or plant some vegetables or fruit, which is given to local foodbanks to help with disadvantage families in the community. The group also have local primary school kids attending the community garden to learn about nature and planting.
