Hub Event at New College Lanarkshire - Coatbridge Campus
On Wednesday 21st May 2025, Amey’s Senior Recruiter Susan Rutherford & Business Support Manager Louise Dick attended a SmartSTEMs Hub Event at New College Lanarkshire, Coatbridge Campus. These events are hosted in Colleges & Universities across the country, bringing together pupils from schools in the local area & STEM industry experts for a day of interactive STEM workshops, guest speakers & exhibition stalls. The team set up in a hall, manning an Amey Stall (see photographs below), with eight other businesses present. During the event they spoke to approximately 150 students from various North Lanarkshire Primary Schools, years P6 & P7. The Amey Staff shared their knowledge, advice & guidance with the pupils, whilst also providing career information involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). They highlighted the required high school qualifications that would provide a pathway into Civil Engineering and other careers within Amey’s organisation. Amey branded goods were provided to engaging students at the event (water bottles, notepads & pens etc).
In addition, Amey Consulting Graduate Engineers Sami Khan attended the Event with a fun & engaging workshop for the pupils. He highlighted his career path into Civil Engineering and in particular bridge maintenance. Sami ran a ‘Bridge Building Exercise’ with various primary school pupils, using equipment he had borrowed from the Institute of Chartered Engineers (ICE) (see photograph below). Sami made the children think about technical design using maths and science, considering not only the construction but also the 120 year maintenance costs which are always a major consideration.
The event was organised and hosted by SmartSTEMs, a registered charity which exists to inspire the next generation about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math's (STEM) through cost effective collaboration between industry and education. This event was in collaboration with Commsworld, Young Enterprise Scotland and New College Lanarkshire.
