Two Overnight closures of M74 northbound carriageway between Junction 6 Hamilton/Motherwell & Junction 5 Raith, including closure of Hamilton Motorway Services off & on slip roads
Road users are advised that the M74 northbound carriageway between Junction 6 Hamilton & Motherwell and Junction 5 Raith, including Hamilton Motorway Services off and on slip roads, will be closed overnight for two consecutive nights, commencing Thursday 05 June 2025, for essential gantry inspections and white lining works. The closures have been scheduled overnight to minimise disruption to traffic and are required to ensure road user and road worker safety.
The closures will take place overnight from 8pm to 6am the following day, as follows:
- Thursday 05 June & Friday 06 June (2 nights)
As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:
- M74 northbound Junction 6 on slip road from Hamilton (A723)
- M74 northbound Junction 6 on slip road from Motherwell (A723)
- M74 northbound off slip road to Hamilton Motorway Services
- M74 northbound on slip road from Hamilton Motorway Services
- M74 northbound Junction 5 Raith off slip road to Raith roundabout (A725)
Signed diversion routes will be in place as follows:
Diversion 1 – M74 northbound mainline closure at Junction 6 Hamilton/Motherwell via M74 Junction 6 off slip road for A723 into Hamilton, take 4th exit at roundabout for A72 Palace Grounds Road, take 2nd exit at roundabout to continue A72 Palace grounds Road, take 2nd exit at roundabout for A72 Muir Street, take 2nd exit for B7071 Bothwell Road, continue B7071 towards Bothwell, A7071 Bellshill Road to rejoin M74 northbound or access at Raith roundabout for A725 East Kilbridge & Bellshill or Access to Strathclyde Country Park.
Diversion 2 – M74 northbound on slip road from Motherwell closure at Junction 6 Motherwell via M74 southbound Junction 6 on slip road to M74 southbound Junction 7 Larkhall off slip road, A72 Lanark Rd, return to M74 northbound for Junction 6 Hamilton off slip road and follow Diversion 1 above.
Diversion 3 – M74 northbound closure at Junction 6 Hamilton on slip road via A723 to Motherwell, B754 Airbles Road (east), take 4th exit at roundabout for B754 Airbles Road (west), A723 towards Hamilton and follow Diversion 1 above.
There will be no access to or from the M74 to Hamilton Motorway Services during these two overnight closures. The rear entrance to the Motorway Services via Mote Hill, Hamilton will remain open.
Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and check Traffic Scotland prior to travelling at these times to check their route.
Access through the works will be maintained for Emergency Service vehicles. Please be aware of Mobile Elevated Platform vehicles (MEWP) and white lining crews working in the closure.
The works will be carried out by Scottish Roads Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, North & South Lanarkshire Councils, Amey South West Unit and Police Scotland.
Please note, all works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
