A725 at North Alderston Bridge, James Street Bellshill

A725 northbound & southbound between Shawhead Jct (North Road) & Bellziehill Jct, for installation of new centre barrier crossover points - Full Overnight Carriageway Closures & Weekend Lane Closures.
Road users are advised that the A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction, will be subject to full overnight closures and weekend lane closures over an eleven day period, commencing at 8pm on Sunday 06 September 2026, for construction of centre barrier crossover points.
The works will take place in six separate phases as follows:
Phase 1 – One overnight closure of both A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) & Bellziehill Junction on slip road.
The A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction on slip road will be closed for one overnight, from 8pm to 6am the following day, as shown below:
- Sunday 06 September (Full Closure Both Directions 1 Night)
As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:
- M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 southbound;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) on slip road;
- A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction off slip road;
- A725 northbound Bellziehill Junction on slip road;
- A725 northbound North Alderston Bridge (James Street Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 northbound Strathclyde Business Park off slip road;
Signed Diversion Routes will be in place as follows:
Diversion Route 1 - M8 Westbound traffic for Carlisle (M74) & East Kilbride (A725) - via M8 westbound to Junction 8 Baillieston off slip road, take 1st exit at Baillieston roundabout for M73 southbound, continue M73 southbound link road to M74 southbound and follow permanent signage for M74 Carlisle (M74) & East Kilbride (A725)
Diversion Route 2 – A725 southbound traffic for Glasgow South – via A8 westbound to Bargeddie roundabout (A89 Coatbridge Road), take 1st exit for A8 (W) Coatbridge Road to Swinton roundabout, take 1st exit for A8(M) Glasgow & Edinburgh Road to Baillieston roundabout, take 3rd exit for M73 southbound and Glasgow South East (M74)). Non-motorway traffic take 2nd exit at Swinton roundabout for A8 Glasgow & Edinburgh Road for Baillieston and follow permanent signage for Glasgow.
Diversion Route 3 – A725 southbound non-motorway traffic for Bellshill including Industrial Estates/ Strathclyde Country Park/ Bothwell & East Kilbride via B7070 North Road, A721 Gartcosh Walk to Bellziehill roundabout, take 1st exit for A725 southbound and follow permanent signage for Strathclyde Country Park/ Bothwell and East Kilbride.
Diversion Route 4: A725 northbound traffic for access to Coatbridge (A8) & (M8): Leave A725 northbound at off slip for Bellziehill roundabout, take 4th exit for A721 Gartcosh Walk, A7070 North Road, return to A725 northbound and follow permanent signage for Coatbridge, A8 and access to Edinburgh (M8).
Local diversion signage will also be in place.
Phase 2 – Four overnight closures of A725 southbound carriageway between Shawhead Junction (North Road) & Bellziehill Junction on slip road.
The A725 southbound carriageway between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction on slip road will be closed for four consecutive overnights, from 8pm to 6am the following day, as shown below:
- Monday 07 September to Thursday 10 September (A725 Southbound – Full Closure 4 Nights)
In addition, the A725 northbound carriageway opposite, will be reduced to a single lane.
As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:
- M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 southbound
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) off slip road
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) on slip road
- A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction off slip road

Phase 3 – One overnight closure of both A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) & Bellziehill Junction on slip road.
The A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction on slip road will be closed for one overnight, from 8pm to 6am the following day, as shown below:
- Friday 11 September (Full Closure Both Directions 1 Night)
As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:
- M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 southbound;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) on slip road;
- A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction off slip road;
- A725 northbound Bellziehill Junction on slip road;
- A725 northbound North Alderston Bridge (James Street Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 northbound Strathclyde Business Park off slip road;

Phase 4 – Daytime Lane closure & Full Overnight Closures at the Weekend to both A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) & Bellziehill Junction on slip road.
The A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction on slip road will be reduced to a single lane in each direction during the day, from 6am to 8pm, followed by full overnight closures, from 8pm to 6am the following day, as shown below:
- Saturday 12 September & Sunday 13 September (2 Daytime Lane Closures & Full Closures 2 Nights)
During the overnight total closures, the following slip roads will also be closed:
- M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 southbound;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) on slip road;
- A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction off slip road;
- A725 northbound Bellziehill Junction on slip road;
- A725 northbound North Alderston Bridge (James Street Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 northbound Strathclyde Business Park off slip road;

Phase 5 – Two overnight closures of A725 southbound carriageway between Shawhead Junction (North Road) & Bellziehill Junction on slip road.
The A725 southbound carriageway between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction on slip road will be closed for two consecutive overnights, from 8pm to 6am the following day, as shown below:
- Monday 14 September & Tuesday 15 September (A725 Southbound – Closure 2 Nights)
In addition, the A725 northbound carriageway opposite, will be reduced to a single lane.
As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:
- M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 southbound
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) off slip road
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) on slip road
- A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction off slip road

Phase 6 – One overnight closure of both A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) & Bellziehill Junction on slip road.
The A725 northbound and southbound carriageways between Shawhead Junction (North Road) and Bellziehill Junction on slip road will be closed for one overnight, from 8pm to 6am the following day, as shown below:
- Wednesday 16 September (Full Closure Both Directions 1 Night)
As a result, the following slip roads will also be closed:
- M8 westbound Junction 7A Shawhead Junction off slip road to A725 southbound;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 southbound North Alderston Bridge (James St Bellshill) on slip road;
- A725 southbound Bellziehill Junction off slip road;
- A725 northbound Bellziehill Junction on slip road;
- A725 northbound North Alderston Bridge (James Street Bellshill) off slip road;
- A725 northbound Strathclyde Business Park off slip road;
Signed Diversion Routes will be in place as per Phase 1 of these works, shown above.
Local diversion signage will also be in place.
These closures are required to ensure road user and road worker safety for construction of centre barrier crossover points and have been scheduled over four overnight closures and a full weekend closure to minimise disruption to traffic as much as possible.
The main diversion route will add an estimated 7.0 miles and 10 minutes to affected journeys via the M8, M73 and M74 motorway routes to M74 Junction 5 Raith.
Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and check Traffic Scotland’s website prior to travelling to check their route.
The works will be carried out by Scottish Road Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, North Lanarkshire Council and the emergency services.
