EXPECT DELAYS AND PLAN YOUR JOURNEY
Motorists are being warned to expect significant delays on the A725 north and southbound carriageways on approach to North Alderston Bridge at James Street, Bellshill, for approximately six months from mid-October 2026, for essential bridge maintenance & refurbishment works.
Reduced lanes and a contraflow system will be in place on the A725 north and southbound carriageways from 8pm on Sunday 11 October 2026, for approximately six months, between the Bellshill and Coatbridge areas.
This major traffic management, which will be carried out in several different phases, is required for essential bridge maintenance & refurbishment works at North Alderston Bridge, over the A725 at James Street, Bellshill. The main body of works is commencing from Mid-October 2026, for approximately six months and has been designed to facilitate continuous traffic flows on the A725 north and southbound carriageways and maintain the safety of roadworkers and road users. The overbridge at James Street will be closed to all traffic for the duration of the works, except for pedestrians and cyclists who dismount.
As a result, the A725 north and southbound carriageways will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for a period of approximately six months. A speed limit of 30 mph will be in place for the duration of the works.
Road users are advised to avoid the area if possible and use an alternative route or other mode of transport.
The works will be carried out by Scottish Road Partnership on behalf of Transport Scotland to maintain the integrity and safety of this route. The works have been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, the emergency services, Amey, North Lanarkshire Council and South Lanarkshire Council.

Graham Drummond, Operations Manager for the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project, said:
“Scottish Roads Partnership is asking motorists to plan their journey in advance and if possible, to use an alternative route or mode of transport while these essential bridge maintenance works are completed. Due to the nature of these works, there will be periods of time when bridge repairs and concrete repair works will require time to dry and no works will be visible from the carriageway, however, the traffic management will remain in place.”
Mark Miller, General Manager for Scottish Roads Partnership, the concessionaires for the project, added:
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank road users for their patience while these essential bridge maintenance works are completed on this structure which is over 55 years old.”
